Part I : World Cup Preview

So, the World Cup is just less than two weeks away. The limelight is now on the pre tournament favourites. Again it is the few big names that are mentioned, Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, England, Italy, Holland and probably the Czechs.

In my opinion, to win a competition, which is usually made more difficult if you are the favourite, you need to have real star players in your team. When I say star players, I am talking about the real footballer not those who are remembered more for their life outside the pitch. Remember the 5 star players who has grazed the World Cup in the past? Maradona? Hagi of Romania? Maradona won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986 convincingly and in 1990, with an inferior team, he managed to pull Argentina all the way to the final. Hagi on the other hand help the ordinary Romanian team in '94 to the quarter final.

In my opinion, the Brazilian team has two 5 star players - Ronaldo and Ronadinho. They are the one who can turn things around, give them an ordinary ball, they turn it into something special. We have already seen what the two when put together is capable of - World cup glory (in 2002). Although another important player - Rivaldo is not playing this time around, Brazil has brought in capable replacement, Adriano and an improved Kaka.

Argentina is the next favourite. What has been good for Argentina this round is that the expectation is lower compare to four years ago , which will allow them to play without the pressure and expectation. The players have more or less stick around over the years, which helps. Any 5 star players in the team? Not really but as a team, they blend into a five star team. Creative midfielders like Riquelme and Aimar feeding Crespo, Messi and Tevez. The opponents will really fear them.

To be continue.....
