How the Japanese team will fare in the World Cup

I was recently asked by my Japanese friends on what I think their team will fare in the World Cup. I replied that there is a pretty good chance that the Japan team will advance to the 2nd round. They agreed (of course, right?) and says that they will need to beat the Australian team and then probably draw with the Croatian. Well, I kind of disagree on that and think that to qualify for the 2nd round, Japan will need or probably draw with Australia and then have to beat the Croatian.

Japan will play Australia first and usually teams will be nervous in the their first game as they will not want to lose it. Attacks should then be lesser and if the overall possessions are similar throughout the game, then it is likely that both will prefer to settle for a draw.

Japan's next game against Croatia should be follow by a Croatian lost against the mighty Brazilian. Croatian morale will be down and with their defence crisis recently, the Japanese might just be lucky enough to sneak a 1-0 win.

There you go....Japan into the 2nd round.
